About this quiz
This New Year's trivia quiz climbs from easy warm-up questions to real brain-benders. You will meet questions about how the calendar got its shape, what people eat and do at midnight around the world, famous celebrations from Times Square to Sydney, and the songs and movies that belong to New Year's Eve.
Play it alone to see how high you get, or use it as a game before the countdown. Each level has several questions, a wrong answer sends you back to your last camp, and two jokers help when you are stuck. Questions come in a different order every time.
Why the year starts on January 1
The date has a long history. Ancient cultures started their year in spring or autumn, and the Romans moved the start of their official year to January 1. Julius Caesar's calendar reform kept it, and the Gregorian calendar of 1582 refined the length of the year. Different countries switched at different times, which is why the quiz has several questions about the calendar.
Many cultures also keep a second new year on another date, such as Lunar New Year, Nowruz or Rosh Hashanah. The quiz focuses on January 1 and mentions the others only when a question says so.
Tips for your party
Use the quiz as a game while you wait for midnight: let everyone pick a level and compare how far they get. The traditions and food questions work well for mixed ages, while the history and calendar levels suit the experts in the group.
If you play with children, start with Levels 1 to 3 and read the answers aloud together.
Frequently asked questions
When is New Year's Eve in 2026?
New Year's Eve falls on Thursday, December 31, 2026, and New Year's Day is Friday, January 1, 2027.
Is the quiz good for kids and family groups?
Yes. The early levels are easy and the questions are written to be family friendly. The upper levels are harder and suit adults.
Does the quiz cover traditions from other countries?
Yes. Many questions are about how people around the world welcome the new year, from food and bells to fireworks and first-footing.
How does the quiz work?
You answer questions across ten levels. Every correct answer takes you one level higher, and the questions get harder as you climb.
What are the camps for?
Camp 1 (Level 4) and Camp 2 (Level 7) are your safety nets. If you answer wrong after reaching a camp, you fall back to that camp instead of losing everything.
What do the jokers do?
50:50 removes two wrong answers. Swap question gives you a new question at the same level. Each joker can be used once per game.
Does it cost anything?
No. You do not need an account or a sign-up.
